The golden age of Classical Athens is frequently mentioned as the pinnacle of European civilisation. Less often mentioned is the fact that Athens was governed by a Council elected by lottery and ruled by a Citizen’s Assembly with a quorate of 6,000. How did it work and why are we never told about this ?
